BELLA + CANVAS

From the start, part of the BELLA + CANVAS mission has been to be aware of the impact on the environment. We are not naive that, historically, the clothing industry has had a negative impact on Earth. Having said that, from the start we all went for, as our motto says, TO BE DIFFERENT. This difference starts at the start of our production process and remains a top priority throughout the lifestyle we foster. We want to be an environmentally friendly clothing company. This article provides an overview of some of the decisions we have made to reduce our ecological footprint.

WATER REDUCTION

In California, we dye all of our fabrics in dyehouses that use 7 times less water than the ordinary clothing manufacturer.

California has the most stringent environmental protection regulations (Environmental Protection Agency, EPA). Thus, by dyeing in California, we are meeting the highest level of environmental compliance. In our dyeing workshops, everything is controlled to eliminate waste. We also use the most efficient machines available, which allows us to use seven times less water than the average clothing manufacturer. We use three gallons of water per pound of fabric, while most other manufacturers use nine to 20 gallons of water for the same amount of fabric. In an average week, we save around 24 million liters of water. This high-end technology uses a very low dye-to-water ratio, controlled by a digital computer system. When dyers manually mix, they usually use additional dye, resulting in inconsistencies and wasted time. The dyes we use are also bluesign® certified, which guarantees their respect for the environment. When the process is complete, the water and dyes are separated. The water is recycled through an internal filtration system and reused again, rather than being discharged into rivers or oceans. The waste dye is also burned at high temperatures in an isolated environment, which helps prevent any build-up of smoke or pollution in the air.

ENERGY REDUCTION

We are seizing every opportunity to reduce our CO2 emissions.

Our sewing and cutting facilities are solar powered. And by the end of 2019, we will have a 450 square foot solar farm that will strengthen our commitment to clean energy. All of our headquarters buildings are fitted with motion sensor LED lighting, which uses nine times less energy than traditional lighting. We are constantly updating our employees' computer screens to install new ones that use less energy. Skylights in buildings also help offset the amount of energy needed, and we continue to increase the number on our campus. All buildings are insulated to minimize artificial heating and cooling. For years, our employee parking lots have electric car charging stations to encourage them to adopt a green lifestyle even after leaving their desks.

ALMOST ZERO WASTE

We recycle everything possible - fabrics, plastics, bottles, paper… and so on!

As mentioned above, we believe that by taking advantage of the latest technologies, we can reduce our carbon footprint. Our systems are high-tech and all orders are processed digitally, with minimal paper waste. Our goal is to have a fully paperless warehouse soon - and we are close! We only have one bin in each building. Employees therefore participate in the sorting and recycling of all waste. In addition, we do not let any tissue disappear. Anything that is not transformed into a BELLA + CANVAS product is picked up daily and sent to various recycling centers. The fabric is then recycled into different items like tiles, bottles, upholstery, upholstery and even energy!

As technology advances, our environmentally friendly practices will also evolve. Our goal is to create the best tee shirts while putting the Earth first. We invite you to join our movement. TO BE DIFFERENT.

Did you know that BELLA + CANVAS manufactures almost all of its production right here in Los Angeles? Our head office not only houses our great employees, but also includes the largest cutting room floor in North America (yes, you read that right!), Part of our sewing facilities, a warehouse of nearly 400 000 square feet for execution and much more! Transparency being an essential value for us, we therefore wanted to show you how T-shirts are made by BELLA + CANVAS. Watch the video below for a look inside the BELLA + CANVAS headquarters!
